What I’m Trialing for 2025
2024 was an amazing season, but I’ve learned so much along the way and have new ideas of what I’ll be testing out for the 2025 season. Here’s a list of things I’ll be trying for 2025!
Low Hoop Tunnels
Low caterpillar tunnels are something I’ve wanted to play around with for a while, and have been following the journey of other, MN flower farmers to see how they utilize these tunnels. I have a hunch they’re going to help with my early spring flowers like snapdragons, scabiosas, etc. and give me a jump start on the season. I have 30’ x 4’ rows that I’m going to test these on and report back!
New Annuals
I may be a bit crazy for this one…but I have some end of June weddings that I need flowers for outside of the traditional Snapdragons and Scabiosas I seem to have a ton of. So…I ordered didiscus, digitalis, phlox, poppies, nicotiana, nigella, and sweet peas. I’m hoping with my low hoop tunnels I can grow these to use for my early season weddings but also sell in my mixed bouquets. I planted digitalis last year that did bloom, but I think I planted it too late because I was only able to get 1 stem from a handful of plants (also…I’m only trying first year flower digitalis).
Succession Planting
This is probably a no brainer for flower farmers, but I’m going to focus on succession planting. My biggest goal with this succession planting is to focus on when certain flowers are done blooming for the season, remove them and focus on flowers that are going to bloom within the next few weeks. I’m thinking this will help keep my flower farm at a small scale but produce a ton of blooms. What I did for the 2024 season is let all the plants bloom throughout the season but had tons of rows of flowers I was trying to maintain…and I could definitely tell when certain flowers were not producing as much. This should be an efficient time save for the 2025 season!
Photography & Styled Shoots
My 2024 season was very focused on just growing and getting flowers out the door - which I will still focus on growing a large amount of flowers in 2025 but I also want to focus on design and styled shoots. I’d love to try to showcase my design work a bit more, and focus on refining my photography skills.
